“Killers of the Flower Moon” unfolds through the masterful lens of Martin Scorsese, drawing us into a somber yet enlightening dialogue with a haunting chapter of history — the 1920s Osage murders. With a blend of grandeur and melancholy, Scorsese meticulously weaves a narrative that’s as rich in historical substance as it is deeply human.

At the heart of this narrative are the compelling characters, notably the evocative portrayal by Lily Gladstone. Together with a formidable cast including Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, they navigate the emotional terrain of a bygone era, transcending mere historical reflection to echo the harsh realities faced by the Osage community.

The film courageously tackles themes of violence and white supremacy, rendering a stark yet necessary portrayal that, as IGN notes, elevates the film into a candid historical dialogue.

Amid the high-stakes drama, there’s a tender pause allowing the audience to resonate with the emotional essence of the unfolding narrative, offering a gentle rhythm to the riveting tale.

As the narrative progresses, the adept storytelling prowess of Scorsese shines through once more, unraveling a vital historical narrative while drawing poignant parallels to modern-day power struggles. Much like his earlier gangster narratives, a tale of greed unfolds, spotlighting the harrowing attempts of one group to exploit another.

The Cinematograhpy

The visual character of “Killers of the Flower Moon” leans towards a less vibrant color palette, fitting its historical setting in Oklahoma. Dark scenes are prevalent, yet, thanks to Rodrigo Prieto’s Cinematography, the details within these scenes are incredible. He crafted sepia-toned visuals so real that they almost allow the audience to taste the dust, enhancing the historical authenticity of the film’s setting

Prieto blended celluloid and digital technology for the film. He used Arricam LT and Arricam ST cameras paired with Kodak film for daytime exteriors and Kodak 5219 for night sequences. In low-light conditions, he deployed a Sony Venice for its sensitivity. He also utilized Anamorphic Panavision T-series lenses detuned to reduce sharpness and add warmer flares, and an anamorphic Petzval lens to distort the edges of the frame in certain scenes. Moreover, a vintage Bell & Howard hand-crank camera was used to create the black-and-white newsreel footage in the film, showcasing a blend of old and new cinematic techniques This visual approach aids in encapsulating the somber and complex narrative, augmenting the film’s historical atmosphere and the emotional gravitas of the storyline.

The Editing

Enhanced by the adept editing of Thelma Schoonmaker, “Killers of the Flower Moon” stands tall, potentially eyeing Oscar recognition again. The editing encapsulates the raw emotions on screen, amplifying the stellar performances of the cast.

Furthermore, the editing syncs harmoniously with Scorsese’s visionary direction, crafting a rhythmic narrative flow that guides the audience through a journey both turbulent and enlightening. The fusion of compelling storytelling and meticulous editing transcends “Killers of the Flower Moon” from being merely a film to a historical voyage leaving a lasting imprint.

The Music Score

Robbie Robertson’s music score elegantly intertwines with the visual storytelling, enriching the film’s historical and emotional narrative.

The soundtrack album is a rich auditory journey mirroring the film’s thematic essence, from the opening tones of “(Intro) The Sacred Pipe” to the closing notes of “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” by Osage Tribal Singers.

The score, contemporary yet deeply rooted in Osage tradition, melds electric guitar flourishes with modern production techniques, creating a unique yet thematically coherent soundscape.

Highlighted by The Irish Times, a bluesy riff by Robertson resonates as the narrative explores the oil boom, reflecting the dual-edged sword of newfound wealth and the ensuing whirlpool of greed.
